What To Expect

In this course, students will explore core game design principles as they integrate each into the creation of their own multi-stage obby platformer game, including key features such as checkpoints, leaderboards, and speed boosts.

Here’s a sample of what a week in the course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

Monday

Students will modify game terrain to create custom mountains, valleys, and plateaus, then apply basic game design principles to design some opening obby stages.

Tuesday

Next, they’ll design a system to save obby progress and update the player’s respawn location using an initial spawn point followed by obby stage checkpoints. Students will establish game boundaries that respawn players who travel out-of-bounds.

Wednesday

Using the Toolbox to create an immersive game environment, students will learn how to earn Robux through premium payouts and the DevEx program. From there, they will set up an in-game donation button to start monetizing!

Thursday

In their games, students will construct a leaderboard that displays the player’s running or final obby completion time and allows for friendly competition.

Friday

To complete the week, students will create pickup items that players can collect to earn temporary speed boosts. Next, they’ll place the boosts strategically so players have to make decisions that inspire thoughtful game strategy.
