Mission

  

We believe every child, regardless of zip code, has the right to a high-quality education.  The Learnatory Mission is to close the education opportunity gap for women and underserved communities by advocating for education equity,  advancing effective leadership in education, and transforming our education system.


Through innovative and powerful learning experiences, we educate students with hands-on, interactive, learning that engages and empowers. We cultivate and arm professionals and students with the in-demand skills, knowledge, and real-world learning required to successfully compete in a global society.


We focus on the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) delivering real-world learning that enable students to: 

  • Improve their competitive standing in the STEAM field
  • Elevate their marketability, and
  • Strengthen their self- confidence in an ever-changing global society 


Purpose of the Young Professionals Board

The Young Professionals Board will support the efforts of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director by demonstrating the following:


  • Passionate about The Learnatory
  • Ability to give personally and commit to The Learnatory 
  • Connectivity and Reach with the ability to connect The Learnatory to support
  • Comfortable in at least two of the four following roles: 

                   o Ambassador                     o Advocate                     

                   o  Askers                              o Social Media Influencer 

  • Two years professional experience and be able to provide manage projects around fundraising, promotion, marketing events, social media, relevant to The Learnatory. Additional areas of experience include education, public school, charter networks, online learning,  fundraising, operations, entertainment/hospitality, and local and/or state government.
  • Time to serve
  • Pro-activeness 
  • Consensus builder 


Expectation of the Board as a Whole:

The Board is responsible for being:

  • a strong, supportive voice 

                         o   Ambassador to help raise brand awareness and 

                              increase enrollments by promoting The Learnatory 

                              services and supporting marketing efforts,                      

                         o   Advocate supporting and representing The Learnatory 

                              as a  leader and top provider of STEAM education,                     

                         o  Asker seeking funding and donations,                     

                         o Social Media Influencer

  • fundraising and resource development 
  • enhancing The Learnatory’s public image 


Expectations of Individual Board Members:Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Partnering with the Executive Director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments


Participation & Contributions

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Mission, Vision, and Motto of The Learnatory
  • Connect The Learnatory to new corporate contacts, foundations, youth organizations, and parents
  • Promote The Learnatory Missions and programs in the community
  • Connect with at least two schools annually where The Learnatory programs can be implemented.
  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for The Learnatory to advance its mission leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve The Learnatory'ss mission 
  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation 
  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in Young Professional Board meetings 
  • Participate fully in one or more committees


Fundraising

The Learnatory Young Professionals Board Members will consider The Learnatory a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that The Learnatory can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, The Learnatory expects to have 100 percent of Young Professionals Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. 


Length of Term

Board Members serve a two-year term. Terms may be renewed indefinitely. There will be an annual review of each Board Member. If a Board Member cannot fulfill his/her responsibility, they may be asked to leave prior to the end of their terms.  


Time Commitment

Board Members spend, on average, one hour per month outside of the monthly meeting working on committee or other projects.

Board Meetings

Board meetings will be held bi-monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings. It is important that all Board Members attend the meetings to hear organizational updates, report their progress, present new leads and/or request support from other Board Members or staff.

Program Events

Board Members are encouraged to attend important events involving The Learnatory whenever possible. Important events include:

  • Performance Showcases
  • Summer Camp activities
  • Other activities as planned


Connecting The Learnatory to New Resources

Board Members spend, on average, one hour per month outside of the monthly meeting contacting potential corporate partners to provide introductions to The Learnatory and in checking with the Executive Director.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about The Learnatory’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications: 

  • Professional experience with accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, technology, science, or the nonprofit sector 
  • A commitment to and understanding of The Learnatory’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience 
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals 
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of The Learnatory’s beneficiary


Service on The Learnatory’s Young Professional's Board is without remuneration.

The  Young Professionals Board Candidate Profile


  • Passionate about The Learnatory’s mission.  Candidates being considered should have experience volunteering or working with a similar cause.  
  • Ability to give personally and commit to The Learnatory as one of their top three charities. 
  • Connectivity and Reach with the ability to connect The Learnatory to local philanthropic businesses, foundations, or individuals.
  • Comfortable in at least two of the four following roles:

                    o    Ambassador to help raise brand awareness and increase 

                           enrollments by promoting The Learnatory services and 

                            supporting marketing efforts,  

                    o    Advocate supporting and representing The Learnatory as 

                           a leader and top provider of STEAM education, 

                    o    Asker seeking funding and donations, 

                    o    Social Media Influencer with access to a large audience 

                           and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity 

                           and reach.

  • Two years professional experience and be able to provide manage projects around fundraising, promotion, marketing events, social media, relevant to The Learnatory.   Additional areas of experience include education, online education, New York or Chicago public schools, charter networks, fundraising, operations, entertainment/hospitality, and local and/or state government contract procurement. 
  • Time to serve agreeing to attend regular board meetings, serve on at least one committee, and attend one-two student activities.  
  • Pro-activeness with a willingness to actively engage and monitor the organization.   
  • Consensus-builder comfortable with healthy conflicts and the ability to achieve resolution.
