We will examine topics such as trans fats, baking soda as a leavening agent in baking, ripening of fruit, artificial sweeteners, GMOs, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic browning of foods. Edible experiments will be used to discuss the science behind recipes.

In this course, your child will:

  • Learn lab safety,      vocabulary terminology, and applied mathematics
  • Understand and apply      the scientific method
  • Review and apply      mathematics for recipe development
  • Learn about      Fermentation
  • Understand the      Clarification of flocculation

Your child will take home:

  • Delicious treats      from time to time (if they do't eat them first!)

Supply Fee: $95

Coding and Engineering 101

Coding and engineering collide in this multifaceted course. Students start with the foundation of a computer—the hardware. Then they get binary (01101100 01101111 01101100) to learn how a computer executes coded instructions. Putting this knowledge together with object-oriented programming concepts in JavaScript, students will program the micro:bit, an interactive, pocket-sized computer that's theirs to take home. They'll use JavaScript to detect motion, send messages, and make games, while developing real-world hardware and coding skills.

In this course, your child will:

  • Use the micro:bit to      code games and apps
  • Code in JavaScript      and build simple logic circuits
  • Understand how      programs work and what code does
  • Develop logical      thinking skills

Your child will take home:

  • Project files
  • The micro:bit

Advanced Robotics & Smart Devices Using the Internet of Things (IoT) Grades 6 - 10

In this course, students construct progressively more complex robots starting with a robot with sensors, robotic arm, and a final microcontroller based robot. Introduces and reinforces the basic principles presented and developed in discussions. Students progress to work in small groups solving selected topics by design, construction, and testing of a robot. Each student then builds his or her own robot and programs it using a microcontroller. This course presents an overview of robotics through a hands-on exploration of discrete topics such as mechanics, physics, mathematics, and programming.

Subject Area:  Computer Science & Technology

In this course, your child will:

  • Use a mini-computer to control a      robot or build a smart device

· Get a strong introduction to robotics and programming microcontrollers

· Explore mechanical, structural, architectural engineering

· Strengthening skills in math and science

Your child will take home:

  • A Raspberry Pi or Arduino processor it and a robot
