"Engineering For Girls" Camp

This exciting, hands-on experience will empower girls in grades 4th through 6th to explore engineering with the freedom to be creative and innovative.  They will build, code and take home their own robots participating in challenges that stretch their imaginations to get their robots to complete a myriad of tasks.  


It's ironic that as we plan to immerse our young women into the field of Biomedical Engineering, a major world crisis has been declared today over the coronavirus from China.  One of the already planned a projects includes developing solutions to stop a toxic virus from taking over the world.  Today's events just show how important the science of Biomedical Engineering is to our campers' real world.


Fashion is taking a new twist with wearable technology! From Apple watches to smart clothes in the future that could have self-healing properties, even higher-tech wearable fashion is on its way!  For example, if you fall and graze your skin, the technology woven into the fabric you are wearing could treat your skin.


This invaluable experience may just be the thing to stimulate our female budding scientists who are needed to fill a critical shortage.

Engineers and designers use Design Thinking to develop products that address user needs, but that same process can also be used to design and redesign user experiences. Combining empathy, ideation, prototyping and testing, students gain experience with identifying and addressing problems experienced by those around them. Students conduct interviews and research, and apply creative problem solving and determination to develop their own prototype of an improved user experience project of their choosing.

In this course projects, students construct progressively more complex robots starting with a robot with sensors, robotic arm, and a final microcontroller based robot. Introduces and reinforces the basic principles presented and developed in discussions. 


Students progress to work in small groups solving selected topics by design, construction and testing of a robot. Each student then builds his or her own robot and programs it using a microcontroller.
